This absolutely wasn’t on my to-do list this morning, but hey, I love to roll with where the day takes me!
Creating an audio practice for teachers has been something that has been in the back of my mind for a while, and it’s an idea that resurfaces every time I join an online class.
I LOVE being in a guided practice, but you enter into this funny dual-role when you become a teacher, where you can’t quite hand yourself over fully to a practice in the same way you used to as a beautifully naive student..but also, sometimes you still just really want some sort of container and space to be held for you.
So, after being asked on Instagram yesterday if I’d ever teach a class live on there (and replying no, but I’d been thinking of doing this) I thought fuck it…why not go for it.
So I’ve had a stab at creating the in-between. A guided/self-practice hybrid.
I’ve gone audio-only so you purposely aren’t trying to follow along with a screen, and to put an emphasis on the fact that this is here as an invitational practice, not an instructional one.
It’s not ‘a yoga class’ in the traditional sense. While I do always encourage autonomy with all my students, this is like that x1000.
The framework of what I cue is light and loose.
There’s a ton of quiet space between invitations for you to play and explore what feels bloody delightful for you on that day. If you want more quiet in any given moment, you can always hit pause for a few minutes longer.
The cueing I offer is purposefully simple and the idea is that it’s open to pure interpretation - there is no right and wrong anywhere to be found. As I was recording it I had some ideas of where I might go in that moment, but I also kind of love that you can take my words and run with it in any way you choose.
A couple of notes:
decide up front if you are approaching this as a teacher, or as a student. If you’re in student mode and find yourself dropping into thoughts of ‘ooh, that’s a nice sequence I could use in class’ gently nudge those teacher thoughts to shut the fuck up for a while, while you take this time for yourself
pauses/moments of quiet are up to a minute at times. Don’t freak out that the sound has cut out - I’ll be back. In fact, even if it does drop off - who cares. Stay rolling around doing your thing
there’s no music, but there’s a little practice playlist at the end of this post that you can play over the top if you like
it’s a 38 minute recording before any savasana you can and want to take on top. I’ll mix up lengths if I make anymore…I didn’t really have a strict plan here so just recorded what felt good
I talk for a bit pre-savasana, then I shut up. The audio will cut off - I didn’t want to time your savasana in case you have the delicious opportunity to stay laying in your nest for like an hour
